Overview

The Ivan Teh Fusionex Malaysia story in brief

Fusionex, founded by Ivan Teh in 2005, became what Digital News Asia called arguably Malaysia’s top big data company. The name, he has explained, stands for fusing business and technology, and the work has stayed close to that idea: software that helps organisations make sense of their own data. Malay Mail reported that big data had been the company’s key focus since 2011.

The company is headquartered in Malaysia and has worked with clients across Asia Pacific, Europe and the United States. At home, its partners have included national agencies, Bursa Malaysia, a trade promotion body and a medical sciences institution. That combination of regional reach and local institutional work is what this site sets out to document.

Everything here is drawn from public sources, which are linked at the foot of each page. Figures are given in the currency and form in which they were reported.

01

Origins

From enterprise consulting to a product company

Before Fusionex, Ivan Teh’s career ran through two American technology majors, Intel and Hewlett-Packard, followed by Accenture in Malaysia, according to Digital News Asia. The experience gave him two vantage points: the engineering of large systems and the business problems those systems were meant to solve.

He told Malay Mail in 2014 that the company had grown without angel or venture investors, funded by customers, and that he spent the first six months writing the platform’s foundation himself while interviewing prospective clients. His goal, he said, was software that was easy to use and helped organisations make sense of their data.

02

Growth

A product company finds its market

Digital News Asia described Fusionex as a business intelligence and analytics firm that had turned to the wider big data market, offering quick, wizard driven tools to clients who lacked the skills to build their own. The approach drew early partner recognition. In 2012 Microsoft named Fusionex its top Business Intelligence partner, worldwide as well as in Asia Pacific, and Teh said the company’s visibility rose dramatically afterwards.

The same report described a team of about 400 working across 14 industry verticals, from agriculture to banking to telecommunications. The core offer was the same in each: consolidating a client’s data so that people could view it by product or by geography at a glance. The company also recruited specialists in statistics and mathematics and offered them careers as data scientists and business intelligence analysts.

At home

Working with Malaysian institutions

In January 2015, Fusionex signed a memorandum with MDEC to build an industry driven Centre of Excellence in the National Big Data Analytics Innovation Network. In September 2016, Bursa Malaysia appointed it as a preferred vendor for enterprise data analytics, to help the exchange track patterns across stock and price movements.

Later projects moved into healthcare, agriculture and trade. Fusionex and IMU piloted big data analytics modules in five medical and health sciences programmes. The Malaysian Palm Oil Board announced a smart palm oil mill with Fusionex at Keratong in Pahang in 2022, and MATRADE launched its Digital Trade Platform with the company in 2023. MATRADE also lists Fusionex as an MDEC Global Acceleration and Innovation Network company.

04

Recognition

Analyst attention and personal awards

IDC rated Fusionex a Major Player in its 2017 MarketScape for Asia Pacific big data and analytics platforms, the only company of ASEAN origin in the report. In 2018 Gartner shortlisted the company’s data platform in a report on other vendors to consider for modern analytics and business intelligence, highlighting its streaming analytics and natural language Smart Query.

Ivan Teh was named Technology Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2014 EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Malaysia awards. In 2019 the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja presented him with a Paul Harris Fellow award in recognition of philanthropic support.

Recent work

Trade gateways and a smart palm oil mill

MATRADE’s 2023 announcement gives a sense of scale. At launch, the platform built with Fusionex already had more than 1,200 members, from large corporations to SMEs, and had hosted buyers from markets including China, Japan, Korea, the UK, Germany, Saudi Arabia, India and much of Southeast Asia. Sectors ran from franchising, oil and gas and palm oil to pharmaceuticals and information technology. MATRADE’s chief executive, Datuk Mohd Mustafa Abdul Aziz, called it the outcome of a strategic collaboration with Fusionex Group.

The palm oil project applies similar thinking to the plantation economy. MPOB’s director general, Datuk Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir, said sensors in the Keratong mill would decide whether fruit was ripe, and that the plant was expected to lower its carbon footprint, lift output and reduce manpower by up to 30 per cent. When it was announced, the mill was in the final stage of local authority approval, with construction expected the following year.

Both projects pair a public agency’s goal with a data and automation layer supplied by the company, a pattern visible across the Ivan Teh Fusionex Malaysia record. This site reports each one as it was described at the time and will add outcomes only once they are published.
